So if you are one of the lucky people who got to see Razorlight at this years Electric Picnic then I’m sure you’ll agree they didn’t disappoint. I, personally have been listening to Razorlight for some years now and was extremely excited to see them appear on the bill for 2019 finally. Their slot was at 2pm on the main stage and when I arrived, in plenty of time at 1:15, there was already a large crowd gathered, sipping on beers and relaxing on the grassy hill that stretches down to the main stage. The band came on in quick succession with charismatic frontman Johnny Borrell appearing at last in dark glasses and trademark worn leather jacket, holding his hand up to greet the crowd ,who were suitably excited at this point.
Their set was a perfect combination of old favourites and lesser known songs. I thought it was well chosen as they kept the interest of the audience while still managing to promote their new material.
They opened with their hit Before I fall to pieces which had the crowd singing along at full volume and concluded with another of their well known songs, the somewhat poignant America which Johnny sang beautifully
There was a somewhat perturbing rendition of In the city where there was a lack of enthusiasm from both Johnny and the audience. He spent the majority of the song wandering around the stage as though he was lost and the crowd were rather clueless as to how to respond to this and began losing interest.
Despite that incident the gig was undoubtedly a success especially since the lads had the disadvantage of having to play in the afternoon, the night time being a much preferred slot for artists.
Razorlight are currently touring England but hopefully they’ll come back to Ireland soon. Seeing as us here at RMI love Razorlight we will be sure to give an update if we hear about any upcoming Irish dates from the lads!
